I haven't done y seams, but as with anything else i'd just take a step back and try and simplify my thoughts about where to start getting it how i'd like it to be. I didn't have a clue about finding the formula. Remove your star trace another line 1/4 inch inside the star, this will be the sewing line. It looks fantastic, and you certainly got the process.

Brian i would make a star, then press it onto a piece of piece of freezer paper (the waxy side will help hold it steady.) trace the shape of the star. The other suggestions she gives are useful as well, but this little tip will save me from buying yet another template/ruler that i may not use a lot (or in some cases use at all!) last edited by mhg winnower ;
